This Month’s Prevention Tool:
The Leadership Landscape - Where should we focus our efforts?

Leaders’ psychosocial work environment is not only about the individual leader. It is also about the conditions under which the leadership task is carried out. This exercise provides an initial insight into some of the factors that influence leaders’ well-being, leadership quality and ability to succeed in the task.

How to do it:

1. Read the six factors below.

2. Select the three
or four factors that you believe have the greatest impact in your organisation.

3. Place them in the matrix.

4. Use the reflection questions to discuss where it makes the most sense to focus your efforts.

Role clarity
Does the leader know what the task and responsibility are — and when the task has been solved well enough?

Aligned expectations
Is there a shared understanding of what the leader is expected to succeed with?

Span of leadership

Does the number of employees and relationships match the leadership task that needs to be carried out?

Administrative burden

How much energy is spent on administration rather than leadership?

Support from own leader

Does the leader have access to support and help with difficult decisions?

Organisational support

Do systems, processes and staff functions support the leader’s task?

Reflection questions

• Which factor has the greatest significance for leaders’ psychosocial work environment in your organisation?

• Which factor do you have the greatest opportunity to influence?

• Where would it make most sense to focus your efforts first?

• Which factor do you talk too little about today?
