Professional love – psychological security from a patient safety perspective

During her speech at our book launch, Louise Vibede began by saying: ”Rikke Høgsted’s book is so incredibly important. We hold the lives of Denmark’s youngest patients in our hands. And that is why we have a great responsibility to look after one another, so that we can look after the patients too.”

So what does psychological security mean to you? We asked Louise Vibede: ”That is professional love. Being able to be yourself, just as you are, and to be regarded with a loving, professional eye. It shows that we are not infallible.”. ”We cannot grow and be the best version of ourselves if we do not feel safe.” Louise Vibede continues, her voice calm:

”Furthermore, I’m not afraid to learn from my mistakes – I feel compelled to share them; to show that I’m human, so that others don’t have to make the same mistakes, and I owe that to my patients.”

Louise Vibede goes on to say that psychological well-being is important in the healthcare sector, as staff go to work every day to do their best for patients. This requires a high standard of professional expertise, mastery of technical skills, clear communication and the use of the skills available – and, not least, using them correctly.

”My aim is to help the younger doctors become wiser and better than me, because I won’t become any less intelligent just because they become better than me,” Louise Vibede concludes thoughtfully.
