ABOUT PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY

What it enables

When psychological safety is present, work becomes both more meaningful and of higher quality. In psychologically safe learning environments, we dare to share ideas, ask questions, acknowledge mistakes, and speak up when something does not feel right. This creates energy, job satisfaction, and collaboration — and allows us to focus our efforts on the task rather than on protecting ourselves.

What it requires

Psychological safety does not arise on its own. It requires knowledge of strain psychology, because we must understand how strain affects people — and how reactions can be managed without pathologising what is normal. With that understanding, it becomes easier to create a work environment where difficult matters can be discussed openly and where shared ways of carrying them can be found.

When psychological safety is present, mistakes are identified earlier, and solutions are developed collectively. This makes it easier to navigate complex and emotionally demanding tasks and strengthens preparedness within the psychosocial work environment. Research shows that psychological safety not only strengthens wellbeing — it also enhances innovation, collaboration, and confidence.

The mental oxygen

Psychological safety is not a trait of the individual, but a quality of the collective. When it is present, it strengthens wellbeing, quality, and job satisfaction alike. A work environment characterised by psychological safety attracts skilled professionals, encourages them to stay, and fosters sustainable wellbeing over time.

Psychological safety is the mental oxygen in the room — the relational climate that allows us to breathe freely, learn from one another, and deliver our best.
